35 years of high performance computing and networking

2004-12-28

Finnish researchers have had access to national computing services since 1970, when a Univac 1108 mainframe computer was installed on the premises of the Finnish State Computer Centre. The machine had been bought with the financial support of the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (Sitra) and was then the fastest computer type in Europe. From the very beginning experts of various disciplines were hired for user support. Later the activities expanded to cover telecommunication networks, when the Finnish University and Research Network, Funet was established in 1984. Today CSC is the Finnish IT center for science and provides versatile computing, communication and data storage services as well as scientific expertise for the whole of Finnish research community.
